  1. About the NetWare Migration Utility
  2.  
  3. NetWare Migration Utility v1.0 simplifies the upgrade process 
  4. from NetWare v2.1x and v2.2 to NetWare v3.11.  
  5.

  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. The NetWare Migration Utility allows you to upgrade your 
  10. servers from v2.1x and 2.2 to v3.11 using two methods:
  11.  
  12. o   Across-the-wire, where you upgrade from a v2.1x server  
  13.     to a v3.11 server that is on the same network.
  14.  
  15. o   Same-server, where you upgrade your v2.1x server to a  
  16.     v3.11 server.
  17.  
  18. Across-the-Wire Migration
  19. -------------------------
  20. Across-the-wire migration allows you to preserve your user
  21. environment (users and their trustee assignments), as well
  22. as the default account balances and restrictions, accounting
  23. methods, and print queues and print servers. These entities
  24. are all contained in the bindery. A bindery is a database
  25. that contains definitions for entities such as users,
  26. groups, workgroups, file servers, print servers, etc.

  30. Data files are migrated across the network to the
  31. destination server, while the selected bindery information
  32. is migrated to the working directory on the local hard
  33. drive, translated to the v3.11 bindery format, then migrated
  34. to the destination server.

  36. When you use the across-the-wire method, you can choose
  37. either the Standard or the Custom migration option. The
  38. Standard option provides the easiest path for a simple
  39. migration: it migrates all information from the v2.1x
  40. server, across the network, to a v3.11 server.  The Custom 
  41. option lets you select specific information from
  42. the bindery, as well as data files, so that you can migrate
  43. a server or several servers (one at a time) and create a
  44. customized destination server.

  46. Same-Server Migration
  47. ---------------------
  48. The same-server migration allows you to use only one server,
  49. but there is some risk involved to the data because you have
  50. to remove it from the server and remove the 286 partition as
  51. well. Also, you may not be able to migrate the file attributes.

  53. When you use the same-server method, you can
  54. use only the Custom option because you cannot migrate data
  55. files. You must back up your data files, then restore them
  56. to the server after you install NetWare v3.11.

  59. NetWare v3.x Overview
  60. ---------------------

  64. documentation set to familiarize yourself with v3.11 and the
  65. changes made since v2.1x.

  67. WARNING: The NetWare Migration Utility is not the same 
  68. utility as UPGRADE that is documented in NetWare v3.11 
  69. Installation. Do not use the UPGRADE instructions.

  72. Requirements for Across-the-Wire Migration
  73. ------------------------------------------
  74. o The NetWare Migration Utility files from NetWare Express.
  75.  
  76. o A DOS workstation with at least 640 KB of memory.
  77.  
  78. o Either a hard drive on the workstation with 5 MB of memory
  79. free or another network drive.
  80.  
  81. o A 386-processor or higher machine with NetWare v3.11    
  82. installed.

  84. o A network with the DOS workstation, source server, and  
  85. destination server attached.

  88. Requirements for Same-Server Migration
  89. --------------------------------------
  90. o The NetWare Migration Utility files from NetWare Express.
  91.  
  92. o A DOS workstation with at least 640 KB of memory.
  93.  
  94. o Either a hard drive on the workstation with 5 MB of memory
  95. free or another network drive.
  96.  
  97. o A 386-processor or higher machine as the server.
  98.  
  99. o A backup device to back up data files from the v2.1x
  100. server and restore it to the v3.11 server.

  103. The NetWare Migration Utility v1.0 has been compressed into the
  104. file MIGRAT.ZIP.  Download MIGRAT.ZIP and use PKUNZIP.EXE to
  105. decompress the file.  PKUNZIP.EXE is available on this service if
  106. you don't already have a copy.  To decompress the file type:

  108.      c:>pkunzip MIGRAT.ZIP <destination directory>:

  110. The contents of the MIGRAT.ZIP file will be copied into the
  111. destination directory.  Included with the migration files is
  112. documentation to assist you in doing the migration.  The
  113. documentation is organized by chapter and is in ascii text.  The
  114. documentation is in the file MANUALTX.ZIP.  The documentation is
  115. also available in default postscript format and must be 
  116. downloaded separately.  The file name is MIGMAN.ZIP.
